As part of the Year 12 Languages unit Post School Options, students visited the JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa to gain first-hand insight into the application of languages in the workforce. The excursion provided authentic exposure to careers in hospitality, business, marketing, and sales, demonstrating the value of multilingual communication in global industries.
During lunch in the JW Marriott's Citrique restaurant, students engaged with hotel staff, observed professional workplace interactions, and explored how language skills can enhance employability and open opportunities in both local and international contexts. This experience strengthened their understanding of how languages are applied beyond the classroom and supports informed decision-making about future career pathways.
Comment from Year 12 Spanish Class:
“This Wednesday, the combined Spanish and Japanese language classes had the opportunity to visit the JW Marriott in Surfers Paradise. It was a fantastic look into how learning new languages can help in our career, and connections on an international level”.
“Yesterday, the Year 12 language classes enjoyed a great meal and real, valuable insight into the various advantages of learning a second or even third language in our personal and professional lives as we approach the end of high school. The consistent and permeating sense of harmony and professionalism irrespective of national, cultural, and linguistic differences was a brilliant reminder of what makes this country what it is”.
“We learned about the various herbs that the JW Marriot kept in a garden behind the kitchen like rosemary, parsley and mint. The chef was a cool person”.
“The languages excursion to the JW Marriot was amazing! Seeing the opportunities languages can provide across all industries and nations has definitely inspired me to continue my Spanish studies beyond school. We bonded with our cohort, celebrated our final year of languages, and it was great speaking with Spanish and Japanese speakers from the JW Marriot's various sectors”.
