HPE

The primary purpose of Health and Physical Education (HPE) is to provide each student with the knowledge, skills, confidence, and motivation to engage in a healthy active lifestyle and to create a supportive environment that is conducive to enjoyable lifelong physical activity opportunities for students, families, staff and the community.

A well-planned, structured and sequential Prep to Year 12 curriculum is designed to provide cognitive content and learning experiences in a variety of disciplines, including basic fundamental movement skills, fitness, dance, teaching games through an understanding of rules and tactics/strategies, team and individual sports, sports aerobics and swimming.  The faculty staff believes that quality physical education should promote each student's optimum physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and social development through various well-planned physical activities, and should promote activities and sports that all students enjoy and can pursue throughout their lives.  Qualified, trained specialist teachers deliver Health and Physical Education here at the College.

In Prep to Year 3, students are provided with three 40-minute lessons per week and learn about Health and also Physical Education.  Students in Years 4 - 6 receive two 40-minute lessons per week.  With a genuine focus on participation and enjoyment, a positive experience in each lesson ensures that all children benefit. Not only does this engagement improve general physical and mental health, but it also improves focus and concentration, and can lead to improved academic outcomes.  Staff aspire to provide a program that fully maximises each student’s capacity, and to provide a developmental approach that caters to individual needs and abilities.  The goal is to increase the development and success of fundamental motor skills of every student and to maintain an ongoing passion for physical activity throughout life.

A.B. Paterson College also takes advantage of the existing programs that exist in the community and utilises experts in specific fields, including Swimming, Golf, and AFL just to name a few, to assist in further enriching the tuition for the students.  In addition, having a solid relationship with parents further reinforce what is being learned in class is paramount, and the faculty staff are always looking at opportunities to further strengthen our rapport with the community in order to obtain the best outcomes for our students.  The faculty encourages families to engage with their children to further consolidate their skill development.
