News from Year 5 Classrooms

Feb 17, 2026 8:32 AM

Welcome to our latest news in the Year 5 classrooms! We have had an exciting and eventful term filled with various activities and learning experiences. Here are some highlights from our recent events and classroom activities.

Our annual Years 4–6 Swimming Carnival was an absolute splash-hit! Under clear skies and with plenty of house spirit on display, our students dived in and gave it their all across a range of events, including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and the ever-exciting relays.

It was fantastic to see such determination, resilience and encouragement throughout the day. From first-time competitors to seasoned swimmers, every student demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and a willingness to have a go. The cheers from the sidelines and the pride in representing their houses made for a wonderful carnival atmosphere.

Congratulations to all of our participants for their terrific efforts, and a big well done to our event winners on their impressive achievements.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated staff, supportive parents and generous volunteers who helped ensure the day ran so smoothly. Events like these are only possible because of your time and commitment.

We are already looking forward to our next opportunity to come together for another day of fun, friendly competition and school spirit!

This term, our Year 5 students have been exploring the fascinating world of light in their Science unit. Through hands-on experiments and investigations, students have learned about the properties of light, how light travels and how it interacts with different materials. They have also explored concepts such as reflection, refraction, and the visible spectrum. The highlight of this unit has been the creation of peek boxes, ray diagrams and fair testing, allowing students to see the practical applications of their learning. It has been a bright and enlightening experience for all!

Our Technology unit this term is closely linked to the children’s Science learning. Students have been using their science research on how light behaves, including properties of materials to create lighting in a real-world city. Students have started to plan and design a circuit using a map of a city, using sketches, diagrams and scaled layouts. Utilising their knowledge of circuits, students are exploring how thoughtful design and the use of reflective materials and limited resources (button battery, led light, foil and paper) can ensure that light is visible on a city map.

In Art class, our Year 5 students have been honing their observational and sketching skills through the creation of still life artworks. Using a variety of mediums such as pencil, charcoal, and pastels, students have been learning to capture the details and textures of everyday objects under light and shadows. The results have been impressive!

As we continue to progress through the term, we would like to extend our gratitude to all parents and guardians for their continued support and involvement in our school community.
