A.B. Paterson College Goes Global: Learning from Huntsville
While our students were busy launching rockets and diving into astronaut training at U.S. Space & Rocket Centre, our A.B. Paterson College team took the opportunity to visit the local school’s district which is responsible for 26,000 students in 26 schools.
On April 22, we had the privilege of visiting Huntsville City Schools district in Huntsville, where we were warmly welcomed into their Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program.
We spent the day engaged in rich conversations and hands-on experiences with Rebecca Campbell, HCS Gifted Services Coordinator, and Sarah Johnson, HCS Gifted Referral Specialist.
Highlights from our visit included:
Academic Enrichment & Project-Based Learning
We explored how inquiry-driven learning is embedded across their programs, with a strong emphasis on student voice, complexity, and real-world application.
Service-Learning Curriculum
A particular strength of the Huntsville approach is their commitment to purpose-driven learning. Students are encouraged not just to achieve, but to contribute by designing projects that have genuine community impact.
Career Tech Centre Tour
We toured their impressive Career Tech facility, which offers students access to future-focused pathways and industry-aligned learning experiences. The scale and intentionality of these opportunities were striking.
Challenger Elementary GATE Classroom Visit
Perhaps the most powerful moment of the day was stepping into a GATE classroom and seeing the learning in action. Students demonstrated creativity, critical thinking, and confidence as they worked through complex tasks.
Visits like this matter. They sharpen our thinking, challenge our assumptions, and remind us that great teaching is both local and global. We returned to A.B. Paterson College energised, reflective, and full of ideas. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside colleagues who share our commitment to excellence in education.

A.B. Paterson College acknowledges the Kombumerri People as Traditional Custodians of the land, sea, waterways, and skies in which we learn and play. We also pay our respects to elders, past, present, and emerging, and recognise their continuing connection to country and ways of learning.
