The A.B. Paterson College Athletics Club incorporates our Cross Country (Running Club) and Track & Field programs. The program runs year round in a variety of formats and caters for all students at the College. The program will help students with aspirations in Cross Country or Track & Field, but will also help students build the necessary athletic foundations required for any land based sport.
The Running Club carries a rich history at the College, created and led by our former Director of Activities, Mr Ian Taylor. The club has created an inclusive environment for our students to get fit and enjoy their running.
The Running Club acts as our training program for the Cross Country season from early in Term 1 (following Swimming) up until the end of Term 2. The program focuses on the improvement of students, rather than focusing on winning or outcomes. We have welcomed Steve Jackson to the College in 2022 as our Lead Coach for the Running Club and we are very excited about the direction of the program. Steve is heavily involved in the Gold Coast running scene; working as a coach, event director, emcee and occasionally; as a runner. Steve has a degree in Human Movement and is a Level 2 Run Coach and is as passionate about creating enjoyment and helping individuals improve; whether that be completing their first event or qualifying for the next level on the track.
The Running Club transitions into our Middle Distance program in Term 3 before recommencing in Term 4 for preseason.
The Track & Field program is fast growing at A.B Paterson and we are fortunate to have the services of some extremely talented coaches.
The Track & Field program has programs running year round that are aimed at building foundational athletic skills for the students involved. As we move closer to the Track & Field season, our program grows to offer each student the opportunity to train and compete in their chosen discipline. The College is very lucky to have Leana Joyce joining our Track & Field team in 2022 as a Lead Coach. Leana is a Level 4 Specialist Athletics Coach in Sprints, Hurdles, Relays & Development as well as a Level 3 Advanced Event Group Coach for Jumps. Leana has worked with a number of school programs through Victoria and Tasmania whilst also coaching for Athletics Australia, Athletics Victoria & Athletics Tasmania in their High Performance Programs. On top of that, Leana has worked as a running coach for the AFLW Gold Coast Suns, Tasmania Devils AFL program and Oakleigh Chargers AFL program.
We are very excited about the direction of our Athletics program and can’t wait to see it continue to grow.
