A.B. Paterson College Swimming Club is run independently to the school swimming program. It is a registered club affiliated with Swimming Queensland. Students can join the club for an annual membership fee, making them eligible for club nights, and enabling them to compete at any Swimming Queensland sanctioned meet. Membership to A.B. Paterson College Swimming Club is only available to students within the College. Currently our swimmers range in age from 6 - 14 years.
Becoming a member of A.B. Paterson College Swimming Club will give children the opportunity to practice the skills needed for competitive swimming. Club nights are held fortnightly from September - April. The emphasis for Club nights is to have fun, perform a personal best and prepare for competitive swim meets.
During club nights, times are recorded, with points allocated for participation, equalling personal best times and improvement on times. Successful Swimming Club nights are when a child does a personal best, it’s not about the winner or the best on the night.
At the end of the swimming season, awards are given for:
The A.B. Paterson College Swimming Club caters for all ages and abilities from recreational swimmers through to swimmers competing at national levels. Our ASCTA qualified coaches have a goal to help every swimmer achieve their full potential, and to provide a friendly and supportive environment.

For the younger swimmers or one who is just started out 25m is the recommended entry level. The Coaches have set target times for swimmers to advance to 50m in each stroke. This gives the swimmers the time to develop their skills and confidence for each stroke in their own time. For example, a swimmer might be confident to swim 50m in freestyle but be still doing 25m butterfly.
Times are recorded, using an electronic timing system.
Points allocated for participation, equalling personal best times and improvement.
As a minimum requirement, we ask that the child can swim 25m of freestyle confident and independently.
We are very excited about our brand new semi automatic Dolphin timing system. This is connected to an App “Meet Mobile” (there is a small cost to this in your App store) This App will record times for every swimmer and shows their time improvement instantly. Results for each club night are posted on the pool notice board at the end of every club night.
For each Club Night to run successfully, we need volunteers to help with setting up of marshalling, timekeeping and, of course, the BBQ – so please don’t wait to be asked - volunteer!
Timekeeping can seem daunting at first but it does give you the best seat in the house. We can’t run a Club night without 14 timekeepers, 2 for each lane. It is as easy as pressing a stop button.
It is a good way to meet people and also enables the regulars to have a break and watch their kids swim!
Throughout the swimming season, we aim to attend swimming meets as a team (including coaching staff). There are a variety of levels of competition available, and all competitive swimming levels will be catered for. Please check with Peter Gee or Ric Cashman to see which meets and events are suitable for your child/children.
