In 1998, A.B. Paterson College adopted Teaching for Understanding (Blythe et.al, 1998) and the philosophy outlined in ‘Smart Schools’ (Perkins, D., 1992) as a whole school approach to teaching and learning. The College has built strong relationships with researchers from Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Project Zero since that time. On the 22, 23 and 24 July 2006, the College hosted the first conference overtly focusing on the Teaching for Understanding framework in Australia. Following the conference, A.B. Paterson College Principal Dawn Lang wrote an article entitled "Thinking, not just learning" that answers some fundamental questions regarding Teaching for Understanding.
